My Favorite Bra Brand
First up an old favorite? Who hasn’t heard of Playtex? For me it’s a name I’ve literally grown up with and I’m loving their latest styles too.
Pictured below I’ve photographed 3 of my current faves *.
Going in clockwise direction:-
The classic non-contour bra (I’ve shown in black below) has hidden panels that naturally contour to your curves. It’s lacy and sexy and underwired, but very comfy
The high impact wirefree bra (in white below) is really comfy and supportive with its fuller cups, comfy straps and taller sides. It’s ideal for gym sessions and getting out and about being active. It also made in a moisture wicking fabric.
The Ultimate Lift and Support wirefree bra is also made in a farbic that wicks moisture away to keep you cool and comfortable all day. It’s suuper comfy, no wires, nothing that bites into me, and it has wide straps for the win too.
How Should a Bra Look On Your Body?
- Your bra should enhance the way your bosoms fall.
- It should centre your bosoms so that your bust is in line with your rib cage and lifted to about half way between your elbows and your shoulders.
- Position your bra so that it sits slightly lower at the back than the front. This has the effect of tipping your bust upwards a little, makes your breasts sit better, and can also help to avoid unsightly back-bulge.
- In front of a mirror, lift your arms above your head. If the bra stays put, you’re all good. It shouldn’t lift off the chest at the front.
- If you choose an underwire bra, the underwire must sit snug and flat against your rib cage, but behind your actual breast, not on any part of it. Your bosom should sit comfortably in the cup without bulging out. To do this, you might like to lean forward when you put on your bra and position the underwire correctly first.
Finding a bra that offers both good support and style is definitely possible. Here are some tips to help you find the right balance:
How can I Find a Bra That Offers Good Support Without Sacrificing Style?
We’ve all been there haven’t we? When we’re over the age of 50, many of us opt for good support and super comfort, which can sometimes mean giving up on style.
Here are some sensible tips to help you pick a bra that will make you feel both sexy and supported.
- Look for bras with underwire: Underwire bras are a great option for women who need more support. They provide lift and shaping while still offering a stylish design. Just make sure that the underwire doesn’t dig into your rib cage.
- Always check for adjustable straps: Adjustable straps allow you to customize the fit of your bra to your specific body shape, which is so important for good support. They can also add a stylish touch if they are designed with pretty details like lace or embroidery.
- Consider the cup design: Bras with full cups, molded cups, or padded cups provide good support and shaping, while still offering a stylish design. They are especially great for women with larger busts.
- Try a bralette with built-in support: Bralettes are usually considered less supportive than other bra types, but some styles have built-in support like underwire, padding, or a wider band which provides more support.
- Look for pretty bras which have supportive materials: Bras made with high-quality fabrics like cotton, microfiber, or spandex can offer good support while still being stylish. They can also provide moisture-wicking benefits which equates to added comfort.
Which Bra Should I Choose?
Tips on how to choose the right bra and get the perfect fit
- When choosing a bra make sure that it’s not too loose, and not too tight. Too loose and it will not give you support, too tight and you will be uncomfortable and have bulge.
- Put your thumb under the clasp at the back and pull it away from your body. It shouldn’t pull away by more than about 3 or 4 cms.
- Good bras are made from high quality fabrics with high tensile strength and good elastic recovery. They should last for many wears.
- Cheap bras on the other hand might last a few washes, but unless you are very careful and hand wash them, they will probably lose their elasticity and grip.
- Good bras though are finely engineered ๐
Different Types of Bra
Today we have so many types of bra available to us that itโs often hard making the right choice.
You may have got used to a favorite bra which is now out of stock, or you may just be looking for a one-off special occasion bra. Your breast shape may have changed and you’re finding it hard to find the right fit.
To help you update your closet with great fitting bras (a must if you want your clothes to look great on you) Iโve done some research on some of the many different styles and types of bras to make it easier for you.
I avoid underwires too – soft and comfortable as possible are my criteria (and avoidance of wearing them at home!)
Best Bra for Elderly Woman
If you’re of a certain age and looking for the best bra for sagging breasts after menopause, then I think you’ll like this one as it’s my pick as the best bra for lift and side support.
This Playtex 18 hour support bra is a fabulous choice for older women.

- It has wide straps so that they dig in less.
- It features higher sides to help prevent that nasty fleshy overhang we can get as we age.
- If features fuller cups and a taller back.
- It’s supportive.
- It gives a good lift.
I think it’s perfect for everyday wear.

The Lifty Bra for Small Breasts
Want an instant breast lift? Thereโs no need for cosmetic surgery because there are many lift bras, or push-up bras on the market which will give you more oomph.
A Lift Bra promises to give you more natural looking cleavage while still being comfortable to wear.
When you’re buying this kind of bra look for the wording ‘push up’ bra.
Push up bra benefits
The benefits of a good push-up bra are many.
A push up bra should make your breasts look larger, and this is a popular choice for small breasted women. Generally push up bras are padded, making your breasts appear bigger, and due to their push up design they will also give you more cleavage.
A push up bra should give you a little unobtrusive padding.
It’s a go-to if you like underwire support, and a whole lot of lift.
Lacy push up bras and ever-so sexy push up bras go side by side with plain styles that don’t shout ‘look at me’. It’s your choice.
However, when you’re choosing a push-up bra you’ll need to decide whether you want a gel cup or foam type padding.
Also make sure that your breasts don’t spill out over the top – a decolletage is good, but not if it’s overdone.
- Push up lace bra featuring floral lace overlay foam cups gives this practical bra a feminine finish.
- Stretchy soft lace band.
- This underwired bra offers great support and definition for everyday wear.
- Adjustable straps and a hook and eye back fastening
Best push-up bras
Wonderbras are known for their lifting capacity and have been around a long time. Take a look at the best Wonderbras here.
Triumph is a well known brand that has stood the course of time and also have a nice line in push-up bras. This lacy push-up by Triumph is lovely and it features
- stretch lace to create a natural shape
- and exquisite floral embroidery
It would be a perfect bra for evening wear.
Check out a selection of other classic push up bras at the best prices here.
Underwired Bras
Underwired bras are more structured, and can be a good choice for women with large bosoms because they can provide better support thanks to the underwiring.
What is the purpose of underwire bras?
Underwired bras can give an overall better shape to your breasts because they offer both improved lift and better separation.
Can I wear an underwear bra everyday?
Yes, as long as it fits properly and is comfortable.
If the bra digs into your breast tissue, or the wire becomes exposed over time and cuts into you, then obviously it’s better to discontinue wearing this type of bra to prevent injury.
An underwire bra must fit well, so that the wire doesn’t dig into you around the chest.
Some women dislike underwire bras for this very reason, never finding one that fits comfortably. Others, however, love them for the enhanced silhouette they can provide.

What is The Most Comfortable Bra for Large Breasts?
You walk into a store and see rows, even walls full of gorgeous lacy bras in all the colours of the rainbow. You spend a while going through them and find the perfect style and colour.
Then you begin flicking through the rails and find your bra size but when you reach the changing room you realise that despite pulling, tweaking and shoving, the cup size is way too small and your boobs flow over the sides – so you take it back, and look again, only to find that the cup size you need isnโt there as this style only caters to smaller boobs.
Then in a state of imminent depression you head to the boring neutral coloured bra section to find your size.
Don’t do that! Read our sizing guide in this post, and buy one of the comfortable but stylish bras in the links below.
Best comfortable bras for large breasts
Good support bras are a must-have for large breasts, so too is an unpadded bra.
Here are our picks for the best full figure bras.
Playtex bras
I’ve always loved Playtex Bras, and have one in my wardrobe right now. This Playtex 18 hour comfort strap bra is a favourite. It offers good support and is comfortable but attractive.
It also features …
- Higher sides for coverage
- Wider straps means no digging into your shoulders.
- Rounder cups and no spillage
Playtex cross your heart bra
Another favourite for many women is the Playtex Cross Your Heart Bra. It’s an unpadded bra that features …
- Softly seamed stretch foam, with subtle heart design.
- Micro-thin foam lined cups offer smooth, contoured look under clothes.
- Lovely feminine sweetheart neckline.
Best full figure bra and best bra for large breasts
The Glamorise wonderwire design is great for full figures, and features a cushioned support band which keeps the wire away from the body and helps to support and shape.
This could be the best bra for lift and side support for large breasts.
Check out the Glamorise Wonderwire Bra Here.
The underwire itself is hidden in a padded channel for extra comfort.
It’s a lacy bra, yet offers great support. It’s pretty, and it comes in several different colours.
Glamorise Elegance is designed for women who prefer a bit more fashion but donโt want to give up on comfort. That’s my type of bra!
Racerbrack Bras and T Back Bras
Racerback bras can be racy, but also comfortable for larger breasted women. Check out a comfortable, sporty Racerback Bra Here.
They offer freedom of movement and good support.
Try one with no wires and no padding.
You’re looking for super lift fabric and a wire free channel to lift your girls, and not flatten you out.
Racerbacks can be very racy and attractive with lace detail or they can be comfortable and sporty.
When to wear a Racerback bra?
Racerback bras are great for summertime, they’re also good for sporting activities because they provide good support and the straps won’t fall off your shoulders, plus overall they can help your posture as they tend to pull your shoulders back a little.
Here’s a selection of some lovely Sporty and Lacy Racerback Bras.
T back bras
A T back bra is similar to a racerback bra, and is a great choice is you have a dress or top that shows your shoulders.
If you don’t want your bra straps to show, then this type of bra could be an ideal choice for you because it crosses into a tight T shape at the back, thus showing slightly more of your shoulders.
Benefits of a T back bra
The advantage of a T Back bra are that it’s way easier to hide clothes straps.
The other advantage to a T Back bra is that the straps won’t slip off your shoulders.
Best T back bra
This is a glamorous bra for occasions where you want to show flesh not straps.
If you have a vest top or a dress that crosses over at the back, this bra will neatly hide beneath the fabric of your garment.
Why Buy a Strapless Bra?
Revealing clothes and bra straps simply donโt go together.
Backless tops, plunging necklines, and off-the-neck formal gowns call for strapless bras.
You could go for an adhesive strapless bra or a more conventional bra with underwiring.
What you are looking for though is one that stays put and doesn’t slide down your back, one that is comfortable, and certainly one that doesnโt slip around in any way.
When you try one on, lift your arms, bend from side to side. touch your toes – and see how it performs.
What are the benefits of a strapless bra?
A strapless bra has the advantage of lifting your breasts, without using bra straps as the main support. It provides a more stylish way to wear off the shoulder garments, and can also help relieve any strain a normal bra with straps might place on your shoulders.
Best strapless bra
You’ll find more about strapless bras later in this post.
However, this is one of my favourite Strapless Bras for a fuller figure and this Calvin Klein strapless bra is a seductive option for smaller breasted women.
Best Sports Bras and Exercise Bras
Although you need a good fitting bra for exercise, and might be tempted to get a fitting at a department store or lingerie shop, it’s still good to shop for your sports bras online because you’ll most likely get a better deal.
So by all means get fitted at a store, but buy online if you can and see if you can get the same brand at a better price.
However, forewarned is forearmed and a sports bra provides a different function to a day bra. When you exercise your breasts not only move up and down, but side to side as well to in a butterfly motion. Your sports bra needs to be super supportive and comfortable.
Best sports bra for over 50
When we reach menopause our breasts can change shape, or become more tender.
So it’s more important than ever after around the age of 50 to get the right fit.
Things to look for when you are buying a sports bra include the following :-
- Contour support cups
- Light breathable fabric
- A comfortable stretchy design
- Adjustable straps for a customised fit
- Straps with minimal stretch to reduce bouncing
- A sporty racer back often gives a nice snug fit
This sports bra comes in many different sizes and would be a good all round choice for exercise.
Ultimate sports bra
I’m always on the lookout for the ultimate sports bra. I’ve found some fabulous bras online – if you’d like to have more of a choice, then check out this selection of sports bras.
What’s Different About a Yoga Bra?
You’ll need to be able to breathe deeply and move freely in your yoga bra.
Although yoga is a low- impact fitness activity, you’ll need to choose a bra that gives you a full range of motion when you’re in poses where comfort and support of your breasts is important.
Yoga doesn’t normally incur vigorous movement but still your sports bra needs to have a yoga specific cup that contains your breasts and a design which allows for a full range of motion without a feeling of too much constraint.
Best Yoga Bra
This 3 pack of Yoga Bras pictured below, comes in pink, grey and lilac and is a great budget buy.
Bras for older women
As you get older your body shape changes. It’s inevitable.
Your size may have gone up and down over the years, especially if you’ve had children, and your breast will probably have changed in shape and size too.
Bras suitable for older women don’t necessarily have to mean lots of bra, lots of fabric and a plain design.
Not at all!
Wear something which makes you look good and feel good – even if it’s only you who ever sees it. The psychological benefits of knowing you look great are really really important. Pretty underwear just makes you feel that much better about yourself.
So before buying a new bra, try on your existing bras and decide if the size is still right, then toss out all your tatty bras or the ones which don’t give you any lift anymore, and then get online and update your lingerie.
Use our bra fitting guide in this post, if you need a little more help when buying a bra online.
What Types of Bra, and How Many Should I Have In My Wardrobe?
My advice is that you need 4 different types of bra (each in two different colours – I tend to stick to white, black and nude/beige) and then one show pony bra that just gives you zing! I have a bright pink bra which always makes me feel good.
Let’s look at some different types of bra style, that come in different sizes, to help you choose the right bra when buying a bra online.
A day bra
For a day to day bra, a great bra to choose is a seamless bra, perhaps with a little padding, definitely something you can wear comfortably under a T-shirt or Jersey dress.
This day bra really needs to lift, give you good shape, be comfortable and cover-up your Nipples so they don’t stick out! Let’s face it at a certain age you really don’t want to look like you’re in a wet T-shirt competition.
A wireless bra is a good choice; you might like something like this wire free Bali Comfort Revolution.
- A revolution in wirefree support, shaping and all-around comfort!
- Ultra-thin foam cups stretch for fit flexibility
- Knit-in, targeted 2-ply side and back support
- Soft comfortable band moves with you
- Comfort-U design for stay-in-place straps
Choose a neutral colour. Consider white if you wear a lot of white or cream coloured tops, black for under black clothes, or buy a nude or beige bra which will be unobtrusive under your clothes in bright daylight.
What you are looking for is a bra that will look smooth under a T-shirt, that is super comfortable and doesn’t dig into you anywhere, and a bra that gives you a natural looking lift.
This soft, lightly padded Triumph T-Shirt bra with lace trim would be a useful addition to your day time lingerie collection.
Best day bra for older women
So what are the best bras for everyday wear?
The best bras for everyday wear are those that are comfortable, supportive, and versatile. Here are some options:
- T-shirt bras: These bras have smooth, seamless cups that are perfect for wearing under fitted clothing. They often have underwire for added support.
- Wireless bras: These bras provide comfort without sacrificing support. They are ideal for women who prefer not to wear underwire.
- Bralettes: Bralettes are a great option for women with smaller busts or those who prefer a more relaxed fit. They often have pretty lace or mesh detailing and are perfect for layering.
- Sports bras: If you’re active or spend a lot of time on your feet, a sports bra is a must-have. Look for a style with moisture-wicking fabric and adjustable straps for a comfortable, customized fit.
- Convertible bras: These bras have adjustable straps that can be worn in different ways, making them perfect for wearing with different types of clothing.
When shopping for an everyday bra, consider factors such as comfort, support, versatility, and durability. Try on different styles to find one that fits well and feels comfortable, and be sure to read care instructions to ensure your bra lasts as long as possible.
Here are some suggestions to help you find the best day bra – something that is supremely comfortable!
An exercise bra or sports bra
When buying a bra online for exercising in you should look for a sports bra which gives you good support.
You want a supportive bra which holds your breast quite tight so that they don’t bounce around when you exercise.
- Look for a bra with wider straps which won’t dig into you.
- Generally speaking a full-cup bra will be better for exercising in.
- Make sure the bra has an adequate cup size so that you don’t spill out over the top or around the sides.
- Probably an underwire bra is not a great bra for exercising – rather choose something with stretchy comfortable engineering
Best sports bras for exercising in
My top pick for an exercise bra – this one by Glamorise
Key Benefits of the Glamorise sports bra …
- Smooth cups – suitable to wear under T-Shirts
- Unique wired sling. Gives shape and support without wire digging into you.
- Unique back. 2 Way stretch.
- Wicking. Materials help you to stay dry.
A going out bra
For a going out bra you need something just a little bit sexy, whatever your age. It might be something a little lacy, possibly with underwiring, but overall it must definitely be a bra which gives you a good lift, great shape, and a feeling of being a little extra special.
Best going out bra for older women
I love this classic bra – it’s a beautiful fit, and beautiful to look at.
I also love this lacy bra from Triumph.
A strapless bra
Your fourth bra should be a strapless bra – for those occasions when you don’t want to be showing your bra straps.
Summer dresses with spaghetti straps, or evening dresses with low backs are just two types of garments for which you’ll need a good strapless bra.
- Make sure that you can do it up and swivel it around without help from another person.
- Make sure it fits correctly. The cup size is very important on a strapless bra.
- Make sure you don’t have spillage at the back just around your shoulders and underarms.
- My advice on colour would be to go for white or nude, because you’re more likely to be wearing a strapless bra with clothes which are flimsier and flirtier, so it’s not really about the bra at all – just the lift and shape it gives you.
- However, if you’re wearing a dark colour to go out in, then you can be as outrageous with colour as you like – Pink, Red, Mauve, whatever lifts your spirits.
Best strapless bra
I really like this Vanity Fair strapless bra. It’s classic, non-fussy and also suitable for larger breasted women.
- It shapes and smooths from all sides eliminating any bulge
- It’s an unlined strapless bra
- Has double knit fabric that smooths.
Sleep Bras
A sleep bra should be light and comfortable to wear.
- Cotton bras are best.
- It should be non-wired and have a soft band and soft straps to ensure it’s super comfortable for sleeping and lounging.
- Look for a good bra in a soft, breathable fabric with a touch of spandex for stretch. The cups should be stretchable.
- Many sleep bras are designed as nursing bras for breast feeding mums as they feature full coverage cups with front hooks making it easy for undressing or nursing.
- However, they are also good bras to consider for plus sizes, because they offer good comfortable support for leisure activities.
Best sleep bras
Made from soft, breathable cotton with a touch of spandex, this bra is versatile, comfortable, has a front closure, and is perfect as a sleep bra.
It’s been dubbed the best sleep bra in America!
You decide!

For a budget sleep bra that also doubles up as an everyday bra, check out the pretty colours and benefits of the Comfort Sleep Daily Bra.
Minimiser Bras to Reduce Breast Size
For women with larger busts, a minimiser bra is designed to compress your bust, and will generally be made of a firmer material that doesn’t stretch.
They work by slightly squashing or flattening your boobs, but do makes sure that they still lift your breasts, and don’t distort your shape to make you look wider.
Also, be gentle on your breast tissue! Your boobs are delicate!
Best minimiser bras
The Berlei Beauty Minimiser Bra claims to
- Reduce the look of your bust by at least one cup size.
- The full cups feature double lamination and have a moulding fit.
- The โtrapped flowerโ system modestly conceals the nipples.
- Made of soft fabric and has lightly padded shoulder straps.
The Triumph Minimiser Bra is also a good bet. Triumph is a popular lingerie brand with many classic styles.
Halter Neck Bra
What is a Halterneck?
According to Wikipedia …
“Halterneck is a style of women’s clothing strap that runs from the front of the garment around the back of the neck, and leaves most of the back uncovered. The name comes from livestock halters.
The halter style is used with swimsuits, to maximize sun tan exposure on the back and minimize tan lines. It is also used with dresses or shirts, to create a backless dress or top. The neck strap can itself be covered by the wearer’s hair, leaving the impression from behind that nothing is holding the dress or shirt up.
If a bra is worn with a halter top, it is generally either strapless or of halterneck construction itself, so as to avoid exposing the back straps of a typical bra.” Wikipedia
Why choose a halter neck bra?
Halter neck bras are ideal bras for a backless dress, or for tops without backs, and you don’t want a traditional bra to show. A bare back is sexy without being revealing, but you don’t want to ruin the lines of your dress by going bra-less.
The halter neck bra can be covered by your hair or the halterneck of the dress or top itself if it has one.
This scalloped lace halterneck is a very pretty choice, especially for smaller breasted women.
Bras for Small Breasts
If you have small breasts you can probably go without a bra altogether, but a bra gives you so much more shape under fitted clothes.
Although with small breasts you can wear any shape bra, don’t feel pressured to opt for padded or push-ups to make your boobs larger than they are.
You might like to try a triangle shape cup that doesn’t swamp your small frame. Stay away from full cup bras because they will swamp, rather than enhance your girls.
Why Wear a Gel Bra or Foam Padded Bra?
A gel bra has a gel insert in the cup which should give you a naturally enhanced look if you have small breasts.
The foam pad is popular because it looks and feels natural while enhancing and pushing up your bosoms. It is also lightweight and can mold to the shape of the natural breast.
Try the Wonderbra full effect gel bra if you’re looking for a good gel bra.
Or try some Foam Cleavage enhancer pads to pop into your existing full cup bra to give you some boobalicious enhancement.
Front Closure Bras
Front closure bras are popular for breast feeding mothers, or as sleep bras, and if you want a bra that is easy to get in and out of – it makes getting dressed a breeze.
Another reason to wear a front closure bra is because you need a smooth back band under a special garment. The front clasp ensures that you don’t have a ridge at the back.
Try this classic white front closure bra.
Bras Women Over 50 Love
I put a call out and asked some of my blogging friends to spill the beans about the bras they love, and why.
Here are their kind responses.
Jan Wild from Retiring Not Shy
My favourite bra is always the last one I last purchased. Why? Well because it will have been professionally fitted (things do change over time), it won’t have sagged or faded and it is comfortable.
My favourite brand for several years now has been Simone Perele bras – they just seem to be cut to fit me properly and they are comfortable and pretty too. But, needing a new bra recently and not being able to find a Simone Perele that suited, I purchased this bra; the Triumph Amourette Charm. I really like it.
Finding a combination of comfort and fit is not always easy. With substantial real estate to manage I find an underwire essential and they are not always comfortable – any wonder most women take their bra off as soon as they get inside the door at the end of the day.
I also need a bra that suits my ‘sideways’ breasts because that’s what they are. So the shape needs to be perfect and I also need reasonable substance in the side panels under my arm. But there is a fine line between a bra that does what it needs and one that makes me feel like a trussed chicken (err old bird).
Leanne Le Cras – Cresting the Hill
As far as bras go – I like to be comfortable.
I prefer a wire free, claspless bra.
My favourites are the Best and Less, boring wire-free/clasp-free $10 jobs!
Annette Jones – World Travel Tribe
My favourite bra like many of my fellow sisters is no bra at all! Yes I do wear them, when I have to. However, there is nothing more satisfying than ripping that baby off as you soon as you walk through the front door or very soon thereafter!
Perhaps I am not wearing the correct one? Goodness knows how that could have happened after the endless fittings and trying on a mountain of styles in those unflattering changing rooms!
Rather than divulge my favourite as Iโve established I donโt like wearing them, letโs just say I have two โevery dayโ ones from Berlei. They have best workout from the 8 others that can be found in my lingerie draw.
Iโve been wearing the โBarely Thereโ from Berlei for about 8 years and find them the most comfortable of the uncomfortable pieces of lingerie to wear.
Ed’s Note: Try the Barely There Women’s Custom Flex Fit Seamless Wirefree Bra.
Melissa Chambers – All Around Oz
When it comes to braโs Iโm very much a โno frillsโ girl.
They have to be comfortable and also look good under my clothes.
However, as a travel blogger there are lots of things that I do that require that little bit of extra support.
So I absolutely love Berleiโs sports bras. I always wear one if I am bushwalking or going four-wheel driving. Just recently I went beach horse riding for my birthday and I loved how supported I felt.
I also love the quality of Berleiโs bras as well. They last for ages and donโt seem to stretch like others do.

Choosing the Correct Bra Size
Women are not made in a mould! We all have different body types.
If you’re buying a bra off the internet, follow our sizing guide below to help you make the best choice, and avoid buying something which doesn’t fit that you end up having to return.
Crikey I hate buying bras. So often I’ll get them home and find they’re actually too tight or too saggy, because I never pay any attention to the sales ladies who ask me, “Now are you quite sure you know how to fit your bra correctly? “Yes, I reply. Because I want to get in and out of the shop as fast as possible.
How to fit you Bra Correctly
- Use a traditional tape measure
- Measure under the bust
- Measure around the fullest part of the bust
- The difference in inches between the two measurements gives the cup size, so A cup for 1 inch, B cup for 2 inches etc.
- The measurement around the full part of the bust will give you the bra size.
- Bend over when you put the bra on so that your boobs fit nicely into the cups.
- When secured, the bra hooks should be on the first catch to give room for any stretching as it gets worn.
- Underwires should not dig in.
- You shouldn’t bulge out all over the place when the bra is on – not around the back, or shoulders or over the cups.
- Straps shouldn’t be too flimsy. Adjustable straps are best if you have large breasts.
- The bra should sit flush with the skin at the front and not gape.
Just as I think I’ve got my size taped, and dash back 6 months later for a new bra, I’ll decide to buy a different make of bra – or as I and my juvenile friends once used to call it – the-over-shoulder-boulder-holder, and Hello! Surprise! It doesn’t fit.
So I then end up in the changing room (with a sales assistant prodding me and tweaking straps – there’s just no dignity in being a woman, is there?) and 10 bras later I’ve found ‘The One’.
Then when The One is exhausted from too much being thrown in the washing machine (I know I know, they should be washed by hand, but seriously who has time for that?) I traipse back to the store and find that brand is no longer available and my bra size in another make just happens to be completely different.
So I spend a long time looking at All The Pretty Bras, even fantasising about the dainty little things I might have worn as a 20 year old, and end up in the changing room with some sensible strong looking bras which my husband will look at, sigh and say, “Gosh there’s just so much Bra!” but which in reality are perfect for everyday life, walking and exercise.
There will be a couple of more gorgeous lacy things which I will probably purchase, and I know will only ever be worn for Going Out.
And it takes me much longer than is strictly necessary to find a good fitting bra.
How about you?
Bra Problems and Solutions
When you’re buying a bra online, you want to make sure you get a good fit, but sometimes it isn’t possible and you may have to return the bra and get another size.
But before you return it because you feel it doesn’t fit correctly, try these problem solving solutions, and if you do have to return it, also think about the problem solvers below when selecting another size.
Bra rides up at the back
- Loosen shoulder straps
- Let the hooks out to a larger band size around your back.
Bulging out around the side and under arms
- Try a larger cup size
- Try letting the hooks out to a larger band size around your back.
Sore shoulders
- The shoulder straps may be too narrow for your body build
- Try a wider strap, possibly one that’s padded.
- Try a strapless bra.
Cups overflow
- This is not a good look.
- Try a larger cup size.
Sagging Boobs
- The bra cups and straps are not supportive enough.
- Tighten the shoulder straps.
- Make sure the cup fabric has good but supportive stretch.
- Choose a sturdier cup, and sturdier shoulder straps.
How Do I Care For My Bra to Make it Last Longer?
To make your bras last longer, it’s important to follow proper care instructions. Here are some tips:
- Handwash your bras in cool water with a mild detergent.
- Avoid using fabric softener as it can damage the elastic in the bra.
- Gently squeeze out excess water, but do not twist or wring the bra.
- Lay the bra flat to dry or hang it up by the center gore.
- Avoid putting your bras in the dryer as the heat can damage the elastic and the shape of the cups.
- Store your bras properly, either flat or folded in a drawer or hung up in a closet.
- Rotate your bras so you’re not wearing the same one every day, which can cause it to wear out more quickly.
- Avoid wearing your bras when doing activities that cause you to sweat excessively, as this can break down the fabric and elastic.
- Be careful when putting on and taking off your bras to avoid stretching or damaging the straps or band. By following these tips, you can help your bras last longer and maintain their shape and support.
What Type of Bra is Best for My Breast Shape?
The best type of bra for your breast shape depends on the size and shape of your breasts. Here are some general guidelines:
- Full bust: If you have a full bust, look for bras with wider straps and a full cup that will provide adequate support and coverage.
- Small bust: If you have a small bust, look for bras with padding or push-up bras that will enhance your curves and provide lift.
- Wide-set breasts: If your breasts are wide-set, look for bras with a center gore that sits flat against your chest to create a more natural shape.
- Narrow-set breasts: If your breasts are narrow-set, look for bras with a wider center gore that will help bring your breasts closer together.
- Uneven breasts: If your breasts are uneven, look for bras with removable pads or inserts that will help balance out your shape.
- Pendulous breasts: If your breasts are pendulous (sagging), look for bras with a full cup and underwire that will provide maximum support and lift.
- Petite frame: If you have a petite frame, look for bras with a smaller band size and cups that will provide a comfortable and supportive fit without overwhelming your frame.
Ultimately, the best way to determine what type of bra is best for your breast shape is to try on different styles and see what feels comfortable and provides the support and coverage you need.
What Are The Latest Bra Trends?
Some popular bra trends that have been emerging in recent years include:
- Bralettes: These unlined, wire-free bras have been increasingly popular for their comfortable, relaxed fit and stylish design.
- Bra tops: Similar to bralettes, bra tops are designed to be worn as an outer layer and can be paired with high-waisted pants or skirts for a chic look.
- Plunge bras: Plunge bras have a deep neckline and are designed to be worn with low-cut tops or dresses.
- Strapless bras: Strapless bras have been popular for a while, but new designs with silicone lining and other features are making them more comfortable and supportive.
- Sustainable bras: With increasing concern about environmental impact, sustainable bras made from eco-friendly materials such as recycled fabrics are becoming more popular.
Ultimately, the latest bra trends will vary depending on factors such as fashion, technology, and consumer preferences. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye out for new designs and innovations in bra technology to find the perfect style for you.
My Story : That Bo Derek Bra Moment!
Do you remember your first bra?
Do you remember Bo Derek? Did you have a Bo Derek moment when you realise that your boobs were getting considerably more attention than perhaps you were!
Then you were taken shopping by your Mum to buy a bra! And it was embarassing.
Over the years we’ve probably all grown accustomed to some form of constriction, but that first bra felt like I was wearing a corset.
And we had a choice of two bras back then. Those designed for action (sporty) and those designed to excite (frilly).
The action bra back then had none of the design features or advance engineering of today’s sports bras. It was more of a stretchy T shirt bra with a touch of support for nubile boobs. It was not really designed for action, and ation was the last thing my parents wanted for me as a young teenager unless it was rising to the trot on my pony!
Moving on there were bras for the later teen and a more developed body. These were truly enormous. More bra than flesh actually. Young guns had no trouble undoing the big hooks at the back which were large enough to catch deep sea fish with.
It was enough to set the stage for my future dislike of buying bras!
6 Things I Hate About Buying a Bra.
- I love pretty coloured bras with patterns. However I’m not always organised when I throw my clothes on in the morning. I have ended up pink faced and pink braa’d as the polka dot pattern shines through a white T-shirt in sunlight, which I’ve thought nothing about in the cold light of morning at home.
- I hate the hangers. Five bras and those itsy-distsy hangers in a changing room and I’m gnashing. Perhaps I have poor small motor skills, but honestly they put me on edge.
- I do not like the way that my boobs seem to be edging out to my underarm region. So these days I hate trying on and really really dislike that podgy bit of flesh between bra and underarm which bras seem to successfully squidge out above and to one side.
- Different makes of bra always seem to be different when it comes to sizing. I’ve been a B cup and a D cup all in one try-on.
- They might be great feats of engineering, but hell, the best can be so expensive.
- I like push-up bras for evenings, but my decolletage has begun to look crinkly – Help! So now I’m no longer a wonder bra type of girl and I’m in search of a make that can iron out the orange peel look.
- I hate the time it takes me to buy a bra.
- I realise now that the only bras I really like wearing every day are wide strapped, full coverage, soft, comfy bras! Heavens, my mother would have been pleased if I’d decided that as a teenager!

I do find that the sizing isn’t consistent. Yet women will only try on “their” size and that’s downright silly. It’s the same as jeans…try on a bunch!!

Hi Jodie, I agree – sizing can be wildly inconsistent. I also think it’s best to try on different bra sizes and different cup sizes when you need a new bra!
Gail
I have tried on thousands of bras for the last 50 years, in all different styles and sizes and never found one that fits and is comfortable. Last time I had a bra that I could wear was in 1968, before I had my two children. I have tried on a bunch hundreds of times and had fittings where I was given bras to try on and all were uncomfortable. Usually too tight in the rib cage and/or seem like they were made for short people without any sagging.

Have you tried a cross-your-heart bra without any underwiring?
Leslie Susan Clingan
Pinned this post for future reference. I wrote a post recently about going on a bra hunt and I am still hunting. Will check out some of the bras you and your friends recommend. I don’t want to give up pretty for comfy but that underwire business has got to go.
Johanna
Thanks for Pinning this post for future reference Leslie ๐ I know, underwire can be tough to wear. I hope this posts helps you find the perfect fit and bra for you.

What a wonderful comprehensive and informative post about finding the right bra. I often struggle to find something comfortable that fits well. As I’ve aged my boobs have gone sideways and even under my arms! So it’s difficult getting them all into a bra cup. I think you need to try heaps on and then select what is best for your boobs plus hopefully looks attractive.
Johanna
Thanks Kathy, I think once you know what you like, then it’s a good idea to pop online and try and get the exact same size and make at a better price if you can. Bras are so expensive.

Thanks for this Jo. I’ve been thinking for a while I need to go bra shopping. So maybe the time is now! I have the bulging out the side problem, but I read there is a hopefully easy solution to this. Thanks Jo.
Johanna
Good luck Jill – I have the same problem and it’s a challenge ๐
Kate
There are some interesting informations here, thanks for this guide, I always have problems finding a good bra.
Annette Jones
Great information Jo, I’ve learnt a thing or two from your post. Perhaps I’ll find one now that I don’t have to take off the moment I walk in the door ๐ Thanks for including me in your post!
Johanna
Hi Annette, thank you ๐ When I was doing the research for this post, I realised just how many and what an incredible selection and choice we have these days. So yes, I think (and hope) that with all the options now that you will perhaps be able to find a bra that you don’t have to take off the moment you get home ๐ Thanks for contributing too ๐
Leanne | www.crestingthehill.com.au
Well there was a lot of helpful information there Jo. Interesting that the Midlifers you included seem to have a preference for no bras or no-frill bras. I think we’re all a bit over the underwire digging into us and the feeling of being corralled! I’ve pinned this so I can find it if I ever decide to upgrade my bra choices.
Johanna
Hi Leanne, yes I think mid lifers are definitely interested in the comfort factor – no longer do we desire to look flirty over comfy! Having said that, I found out while researching for this post, that there were just so many styles, in so many different variations, that actually we can probably do both these days ๐ Thanks for your contribution too ๐
