Super Fashion Styles for Different Occasions
From the timeless appeal of classics to the avant-garde expression of bold prints or laid-back boho style, the choices are now as diverse as the women who wear them.
You only have to look at advanced style icons like Iris Apfel to understand why.
Everyday Wear
I believe we understand what really suits our lifestyle and our changing body shape. It all comes down to comfort, but also looking presentable.
Personally, I can no longer throw on something rumpled from my wardrobe and toss my hair over my head to brush it (as I once did many moons ago) and then head out feeling and looking confident!
These days I have a collection of what I call ‘nice’ separates hanging in my wardrobe ready to go (oh, plus a good hairdryer!)
I prefer to collect easy-wear everyday casuals in beautiful colours and breathable fabrics if possible.
Below are some examples of everyday wear that will suit many women over the age of 50.
Fella Hamilton
Fella Hamilton is an Australian company which was established in 1969. Clothing has been accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia (ECA). Clothes are made to exacting standards, and specifically cater to the needs and whims of older women.
Here are some selected items from Fella Hamilton you can purchase online that I particularly love. They were kindly gifted to me.
It features a V neck, short sleeves and has pockets.
I’m wearing it with a classic Breton squash and wash hat. And FRANKIE4 sandals. Both gifted.
The Janelle Crush Ruffle Hem Top.
I love this Fella Hamilton top top in multi colours! Look at all those bright, happy shades. I’m wearing a Size M with the Suzy stretch sapphire coloured jeans, a Heritage town and country hat and a Teddy crossbody handbag.
Suzy Stretch Pull-On Jeans
Let’s talk about the super comfy Suzy Stretch Long Pull-on Jeans in Sapphire blue. Wear them long or turned up at the hem for a modern twist.
I’m wearing Size 10 and they are perfect for me. I love that I can bend, sit, get down and grubby on the floor with my grandson, get straight out of the car and know they’re not creased, or go for walks with the dogs, and generally always be comfortable and active in these jeans. Pop over to the Fella Hamilton website and check out all the different colours.
I wore the jeans with sandals to go to the beach on a dog walk with Minnie, but white sneakers would be a super option for a more ‘hip’ look, and ankle boots would be another option on colder days.
But you could easily wear this colourful ruffle top with Suzy jeans in pink, white or denim-blue too. Below I’m wearing it with pink 7/8 length Suzy’s.
Sun Protection Sunhats
Let’s not forget good sun sense! Don’t forget your sunhat.
The Heritage Town and Country Hat from Fella Hamilton in the video above (ivory/bronze, I’m wearing size m/l) has an adjustable head size and a wind-resistant, comfy fit.
The Heritage hat is travel-friendly, can be packed flat in your bag, and will return to shape when straightened out again. You can hand wash this hat, reshape it and dry it. It’s a Cancer Council UPF50-rated hat that protects your face, head, ears and neck. Every purchase of this hat goes towards cancer research and services.
Boho Style
I’ve written a lot about the Boho and Bohemian way of dressing in previous blog posts. Here’s a popular post: Best Boho Dresses and Affordable Boho Clothes for Over 50
Basically Boho style is casual, floaty and often colourful, sometimes featuring earthy tones, very often featuring flowing fabrics and wide brimmed hats, but always expressing an individuality of spirit. It’s a vibe, and has a very definite look.
Below are jeans and top from Travel & Living Collectiono and sandals from FRANKIE4 showcasing Boho with a twist!
Classic Style
For those who prefer the timeless appeal of classic fashion style, then it’s important to incorporate clean lines and neutral colors into your wardrobe. This is a great way to create a sophisticated and elegant look.
Fitted dresses, classic trench coats and well-tailored garments can be key elements in achieving classic style Pairing these elements with cowboy boots or oversized blazers can also add a touch of individuality to the ensemble.
Chic Fashion Style
The leather jacket is one enduring symbol of coolness and rebellion in the fashion world. Leather jackets have become a staple in many wardrobes, whether paired with skinny jeans for a streetwear style or draped over a button-down shirt for a more classic look.
Their clean lines and body-hugging silhouettes make them versatile clothing items that can transition from casual wear to a business casual setting.
Hip Hop Style
On the opposite end of the spectrum lies the vibrant, bold world of bright colors and graphic tees.
This fashion style, a hip-hop style often associated with streetwear, embraces the use of eye-catching hues and expressive prints.
Influencers like Taylor Swift have played a significant role in popularizing this trend, making it a good choice for those who want to break away from the monotony of neutral tones.
Minimalist Style
Minimalist fashion style, characterized by its simplicity and focus on essential elements, has gained considerable traction in recent years.
Neutral colors, simple accessories, and intentional wardrobe choices define this specific style, offering a unique look that transcends fleeting fashion trends.
It’s a style that promotes the idea of less is more, encouraging women to curate their clothing items with a keen eye for quality and versatility.
Casual Style
For those who find themselves stuck in a style rut, experimenting with different types of fashion styles can be the next step towards discovering their own personal fashion identity.
Trying out some of the different styles of athleisure wear, or mix vintage pieces with contemporary items.
Mix classic and modern, ripped and bollywood sparkles with a funky leather handbag and a wide strap, for a unique look-at-me casual style.
Clothes and handbags in images above and below are from Travel & Living Collection. Sneakers are from FRANKIE4.
On the other hand, you could try the Bohemian boho style with long skirts, maxi dresses and light-coloured sweaters to bring freshness into your daily fashion choices.
Formal Style
If you’re anything like me, you’re inclined to head out shopping for a unique dress when the pressure is on a day or two before the event!
However, buying the dress of your dreams is always better when you’re out and about before an event crops up.
Shop during the sales, look for discounts and bargains and buy that dress. You will find an event to suit it!
In the realm of formal wear, elegant fashion styles make a statement. Decide which part of your body you want to bare or don’t want to bare.
- Do you have toned arms? Then go for strapless designs or those with elegant spaghetti straps.
- Do you have an unwrinkled cleavage? Then buy something with a plunging neckline.
- If you have a great, gym-toned body, go for a body-hugging silhouette.
The focus of a formal style is on accentuating the best features of your body type. Adding natural elements such as vintage accessories or incorporating retro-style pieces into a modern wardrobe can create a distinctive and memorable look.
A low-back dress can be even more alluring than a traditional plunging neckline. Add some pearls that dangle suggestively down your back, and you’re onto a winner.
- Any formal dress with a slit skirt just above the knee can look subtly sexy.
- Strapless dresses are for the daring. But go, girl, if they suit you!
- V-neck dresses create length and can look extremely elegant.
- Lacy or elbow-length sleeves are an excellent camouflage for tuck-shop upper arms.
- Separates are also a good option for formal wear. I would suggest a top and pants in a glamorous floaty fabric like silk or chiffon.
As fashion continues to evolve, style trends and the ever-changing landscape of the fashion world will be fun for those over 50 because the old rules and conventions don’t apply anymore.
The following year promises to bring new styles and innovative approaches to clothing, challenging us all to step out of our comfort zones, and look for the unexpected in our daily fashion choices.
The journey towards finding one’s own personal fashion style is not just about following popular choices; it’s about expressing individuality and creating a wardrobe that speaks to personal taste and lifestyle. Have Fun!

No thanks. I’m over 60 and I wouldn’t wear those.

Hi Valerie, thanks for popping by. I think it’s important to know what suits you, your lifestyle and your body shape. I agree that not all fashion trends suit everyone, and I’m sure you have your own personal style and make choices to suit you. Go you!
