As an older woman, I want to look the best I can for my age. The question, ‘How to look beautiful naturally’ doesn’t mean no makeup and no skincare, but rather a careful and guided selection of the best products for mature skin.
You don’t need to resort to cosmetic surgery to look beautiful naturally.

But you do need to make some effort to use great products in minimal amounts.
Today I’m sharing some smart skincare and makeup tips for women over 50 for a natural look.
Get the Low-Down on foundation and which ones are best for older women. Find out which is the best makeup for mature skin over 60, and the best foundation for mature skin over 60 too.
It’s a fallacy that no make up is better as we age, because a discreet amount of well matched makeup products, particularly foundation can set us on the road to feeling a million dollars, looking great and feeling confident, in a more natural way as we age.

Best Foundation for aging skin over 50
For a drop dead gorgeous look after 50, these are my 3 picks for the best anti-aging foundations for mature skin.
I love the dewy coverage this product gives. You can decide how thickly to apply. If you have liver spots or dark patches then apply two layers. I only apply one, and straight after I moisturise. It glides on and gives perfect coverage all day long. This foundation covers, conceals and camouflages with a luxurious feel and doesn’t look cakey.
If you’re not sure what CC stands for then here’s the answer: It means colour correcting. A CC cream is not as heavy as a foundation, it’s more of a light tint. This IT CC cream helps even your skin tone and cover up blemishes. It also has an anti-aging serum to help beautify your skin as well. Ideal if you’re looking for something to give a light cover that doesn’t feel heavy.
Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Longwear Foundation
I’ve always loved Lancome products, and long been a buyer of their moisturisers. This foundation gives a really smooth velvety finish. It’s light on your skin but long lasting, and gives you a flawless look to last all day.
Foundations for mature skins and a drop-dead gorgeous look
As we get older foundation becomes a priority. But what are the best foundations currently on the market that are suitable for ageing skin?
Of course if comes down to trial and error, but once you find a foundation you love then stick with it.
My top 3 foundations for mature skin are the ones I’ve used and I’ve linked to above. I’m currently wearing Estee Lauder Double Wear
Gone are the heavy caky foundations of our mothers’ days, which really suited their make up terminology of ‘I must put my face on!’
The Low Down on Foundation
Foundation should give your skin a more even appearance, blur out imperfections, hide any redness and just give your skin a smooth, clear look – a naturally beautiful look.
It shouldn’t be a mask.
And it shouldn’t be obvious.
Hands up those of you who’ve put on foundation and powder or bronzer and ended up looking, shall we say, a little orange tinged?
Me, I’ve done that!
And it looks horrible – though you often don’t notice until you leave your bathroom and catch site of yourself in natural lighting.
Some foundations can make us look older.
Most Lifestyle Fifty readers don’t want that, I know.
We’re on a life-long quest to live well, feel good, look good naturally, and have adventures.
So while looking younger isn’t a pre-requisite, it does fit into the overall equation of looking the best we can at whatever age we find ourselves – for our own pride and confidence, not to impress others.
How to look younger than you really are is an interesting concept, because in fact there are lots of tips and tricks of the make up trade to help us look younger without resorting to cosmetic surgery.
How to Choose the Best Foundation for Mature skin
- Don’t choose a heavy foundation as it won’t disguise your wrinkles – it could make them more prominent as it can lodge into them rather than gloss over them.
- Choose something which is pigment rich, not texture rich.
- Choose a dewy foundation over a matte foundation.
- Use a light, sheer foundation and build up the coverages on troublesome areas.
- Test Test Test. Don’t just test a foundation on the back of your hand. Try it on your face and look at it in natural light as well as in the shop. Finding the best match to your own skin tone is key.
- A darker foundation will not necessarily make you look tanned. It will probably make you look unnatural – and not sun-kiss bronzed at all. Again – find the best colour match to your skin.
Best Moisturisers for Mature Skin
Of course it goes without saying that dehydrated skin cannot be helped even with the very best foundations, so make sure that your skin is in the best condition possible and moisturise day and night.
I use Elements :
- Ageloc Gentle Cleanse and Tone. It’s a foaming cleanser that combines cleansing and toning in one step.
- Ageloc Radiant Day with Sunscreen.
- Ageloc Transforming Night.

After moisturising a good primer can help reduce signs of skin imperfections and smooth the skin ready for foundation.
Here’s a great selection of the best primers on the market ranging from around $8 – $75.
If you want the bronzed goddess look then after your foundation build up the colour with the best bronzer you can find. (I love the Rimmel range).
My current bronzer of choice is the Rimmel Natural Bronzer, Sun Bronze.
Finally define your features with blusher, which will also add more tone and warmth. Here’s a selection of the best blushers for mature skin.
What about Powder for Mature Skin?
In hot and humid climates like Australia it’s tempting to add a finishing powder to reduce shine when you’re hot and bothered.
However powder can really flatten our complexion and age us. If you must use powder use one with light defining properties, something that will reduce shine but keep your skin looking raidant.
I would opt for a loose setting powder if you really feel the need to reduce shine. But do go sparingly.
Best Lipstick for Older Women
I believe a fresh dewy look on your lips is much more flattering than a matte lipstick.
Do use a natural lip coloured lip liner if your lips have find lines leading into them, so that any lipstick you use doesn’t ‘bleed’.
My favourite and I think most youthful lipstick is the ‘colour riche lip balm’ brand by L’Oreal. I’ve tried all sorts of lippies, but the colour riche gives a sheen, a shine and a little colour without being glaringly obvious.
You can buy my favourite colour here: L’Oreal Colour Riche Lip Balm
