Recently I attended a fabulous style workshop based around sustainable fashion.
The 3 hour workshop included super styling tips, trending advice about how to make economical fashion choices, and some easily actionable ideas about how to look great on a budget when you’re over 60. Scroll on down for the tips.

Over 60 Fashion
Now I’m over the age of 60 I’m more conscious about my fashion choices. This often results in either paying more for my clothes (because I choose to buy better made quality basics that are produced locally) or I pay less for clothes because I buy from Op Shops, Charity Shops and Thrift Stores.
Don’t Get Sucked In To Fast Fashion
I’m not saying that I rule out buying clothes from the less expensive end of the fashion market, but they must be well made, they must wear well, they must wash well and they must continue to look good and last for several years. I don’t think any of us should get trapped into the “I’ve worn it once, and can’t wear it again,’ scenario of the fast fashion industry.
More and more I think about how to make sustainable fashion choices.
So I was delighted to meet up recently with stylist, presenter, and torchbearer for slow fashion, Loraine Martin, The Feel Good Fashionista, at one of her fabulous fashion workshops.
Loraine knows a lot about the fashion industry, and she shared plenty of actionable style advice to get us thinking about what we wear, what we buy, and particularly how to be more sustainable in our purchases.
Her style tips were really practical and easy to follow. I loved how she gave us lots of information to put into practice there and then!
We started off in the lovely gardens at Solaris Cancer Care Op Shop in Bunbury, and then we were treated to a few hours of fun, laughter and some exceptionally savvy personal styling.
Many of us found some awesome pre-loved bargains at the Solaris Op Shop to take home with us!
A big plus was that Loraine helped us style those items with accessories, or gave us tips about how to wear the items we’d chosen with more style, and more va-va voom!
10 Tips for Sustainable Style
My top 10 takeaways from Loraine’s styling workshop are as follows:-
1. Don’t follow trends.
2. Know and own your style – i.e. are you more of a street-wise, edgy dresser or more feminine and floral?
3. Pay attention to the kind of clothes in your wardrobe that you reach for time and time again.
4. When choosing clothes, keep the focus on the areas of your body that you love.
5. Know your body shape, but don’t be a slave to it. Understand how to balance top and bottom to give the illusion of length. Find out where your balance sits. If you have longer legs and a shorter torso then try to keep less length below your hips, think low waisted jeans, and drop waist dresses. If you have shorter legs and a longer torso then keep the waistlines higher, think high waisted jeans and empire line dresses.
6. If a particular colour makes your eyes shine, then wear it.
7. The most important style element is confidence.
8. A wrap dress suits everyone, and disguises a tummy.
9. Everyone can wear true red! (Think the red carpet, coca cola and Virgin airlines!)
10. Think about the words that describe your style – words such as: boho, feminine, colourful, cool, polished, bold, simple, elegant, modern, sophisticated, sporty etc, and pay attention to these concepts when you are buying clothes. For instance, if you are a boho style girl, then geometric designs probably won’t look great on you.
