As we age, our fashion preferences either change or evolve. But one piece of clothing remains timeless: the maxi dress which, often by default, involves a touch of boho style.

Why I love Maxi Dresses and Boho Style
I love maxi dresses, and think they’re perfect for women over 50 because they offer a blend of comfort, style, and versatility. They first gained popularity during the bohemian movement in the 1960s and really, since then, have never stopped being acceptable for both day and night.

Casual Outfits for 50 year old woman
Whether you’re heading out for a casual lunch or dressing up for a formal event, maxi dresses provide endless options that can make you feel confident and elegant.
My favourite brand of the moment is Salty Crush. Their range of maxi dresses is constantly changing and, to be perfectly frank, scrolling the choices available on the website is a bit like dipping into a box of chocolates! Honestly, there are so many delightful clothes to choose from and the styles change frequently.

- Salty Crush is an Australian Boho Brand that ships worldwide.
- Free shipping on all orders over $100 in USA, AU and NZ.
- Plus sizes are available.

For a classic style you might wear a maxi with some pretty sandals; for a boho style wear your Birkenstocks or cowboy boots; and in winter or cooler weather then just wear them with a cute pair of ankle boots.
My dress the Eve Eternity dress by Jaase (previously gifted), and ankle boots in the images below are both previous season from Salty Crush.

You can add layers to a maxi dress and wear it all year round – you might like my blog post “How to Wear a Maxi Dress in Winter.”
In short, you can just add a sweet cardigan or a hip length denim jacket, pop on an underwear slip, and a pair of winter warming tights, and you’re good to go during cooler days.

Here are five reasons why I believe maxi dresses are a wardrobe must-have for women over 50.
1. A Maxi Dress Offers Comfort Without Sacrificing Style
As we age, comfort becomes a top priority when it comes to clothing choices. Maxi dresses are incredibly comfortable, offering a relaxed fit that doesn’t compromise on style.
They allow for freedom of movement and generally do not hug your tummy, plus the flowing fabric feels gentle against the skin. Salty Crush maxi dresses are often made in a soft rayon which is lovely.

Whether you prefer a loose, bohemian style or a more structured look, there’s a maxi dress for every taste and body type. With just the right amount of stretch, you can move freely without feeling restricted—ideal for busy days or long events.
2. A Maxi Dress is flattering for All Body Types
One of the best features of maxi dresses is how flattering they are for a variety of body shapes.
For women over 50, who may have noticed changes in their body shape, the right maxi dress can accentuate the positive and hide any areas of concern.
The longer length creates a slimming effect, and many styles come with waistbands, tie belts, A-line or empire cuts that emphasize the waist and create an hourglass shape.
Many of the Salty Crush maxis offer, let’s call them, ‘giving’ designs for those of us with rather more tummy than we’d wish for. I like to say that I’m festively plump around the midriff, so an A-line dress suits me well.
Of course maxi dresses are available in various prints, textures, and cuts, so you can always find one that complements your body shape and colour.

3. Versatile for Any Occasion
Maxi dresses are incredibly versatile. They can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
Pair one with sandals and a denim jacket for a casual day out or throw on some statement jewelry and a pair of heels for a more formal look.
You don’t have to worry about buying separate outfits for different events. A maxi dress can easily transition from day to night, making it a go-to option for everything from brunch with friends to a wedding or a night on the town.

4. Maxi Dresses are Elegant
There’s something undeniably elegant about a well-fitted maxi dress.
The long, flowing fabric instantly adds sophistication and grace to any outfit.
Whether it’s a classic black dress, a vibrant floral pattern, or a chic wrap style, maxi dresses offer a simple look that can make you feel stylish without really trying.
It’s an ideal choice for when you want to radiate confidence, and look chic without having to think to much!

5. Maxi Dresses Offer a Timeless Fashion Investment
Fashion trends may come and go, but maxi dresses have stood the test of time.
They’re a wardrobe staple that will never go out of style. You’ll find that you wear your maxi dresses for many seasons which means the longevity of maxi dresses makes them a smart investment for your wardrobe, because they provide a good cost per wear.
Whether you’re looking for a dress that works for all occasions or simply want something versatile, a well-chosen maxi dress will serve you well, year after year.

In some of the images I’m wearing gifted products. However, I often buy clothing from Salty Crush and I have loved every piece I’ve either bought or been gifted. I love the boho style, and the selection on the website.
Here are the details for the NEW season dresses I’m wearing in this blog post.
Ranaya Maxi Dress – Cap Sleeve Tie Bust Detailed A-Line Dress in Lucy Print Pink.
Quick, at the time of writing there were only a few sizes left in this colour, and the price is just $49.00. This dress was not gifted and I bought it at full price. It also comes in a blue and a brown print.
I’m super crushing on this dress. I can’t wait for a special occasion to wear it to, but it’s also lovely as an everyday dress. The Ranaya Maxi Dress has a graceful a-line silhouette and romantic crisscross tie-up bust with fluttery cap sleeves. It’s outer layer is a floaty polyester while the lining is 100% cotton. It has a super swirl, great for dancing!

Details
- V-Neckline
- Crisscross Tie Up Bust
- Pull Tie Waist
- Cap Flutter Sleeves
- Godet Hemline
- 100% Polyester Shell and 100% Cotton Lining
Rachel Maxi Dress in Pink
The Rachel Maxi Dress features a flowing tiered design and adjustable pull-tie waist. I don’t think the photos really do this dress justice. It’s a beautiful print in a soft red/pinky colour, and the tie waist is very forgiving. Wear a good bra and the low neckline will do you all sorts of favours in the shape department. I love the 3/4 length sleeves which are elasticated at the elbow, but not tightly. This dress is also available in various prints in baby blue, brown, black and navy.

Details
- V-Neckline
- Buttoned Bodice
- 3/4 Sleeves with Elasticated Cuffs
- Tiered Skirt
- Pull Tie Waist
- Modest Split
- Comes in sizes 8 to 20
Maxi dresses are more than just a passing trend; they’re a timeless wardrobe essential for women over 50. Offering comfort, style, and versatility, maxi dresses help women of all ages highlight their unique beauty and personal style.
So, if you haven’t already, it’s time to add a maxi dress to your wardrobe—it’s a decision you won’t regret!
