They are quick to make and cook, and when they’re ready they should look golden blond. Be careful not to leave them in the oven too long or the bottoms will burn. Bring them out of the oven when they reach the straw colour below and not a moment later!

Cheese and Onion Biscuits Recipe
Don’t you love an old smudged, much-used recipe from an old recipe book you’ve had for years?
This cheese and onion biscuits recipe was handed down to me by a good friend about 30 years ago, and it remains one of my most trusted and most loved.
If you love cheese and onion, then you’ll love these scrumptious cheddar onion biscuits which almost melt in your mouth.

Cheddar Cheese and Onion Biscuit Ingredients
- 140g Cake Flour
- 100g Grated Cheddar Cheese
- 125g Melted butter
- 30g Thick White Onion Soup Powder (Try Maggi Onion Soup Powder)
Method
- Turn Oven onto 200 deg C (use bake function with top and bottom bake if your oven has this setting as this will help lightly brown the top of the biscuits)
- Grease a large baking tray, or line with baking paper – Or use a non stick baking tray.
- In a large mixing bowl stir all ingredients together.
- Roll the dough into walnut sized balls.
- Press each one lightly with a fork.
- Bake for 10 – 15 minutes until a light straw colour.
Tips
- If you don’t have cake flour in your panty, then you can substitute with plain flour. When you’ve measured out 140g of plain flour, take out a heaped tablespoon of plain flour and replace it with a heaped tablespoon of cornflour. This gives the biscuits a nice ‘short’ crunch.
- If you’re feeling a little risque try adding a pinch of mixed herbs to the mix, or finely chop some parsley or chives and add into the mixture before cooking.
- If you can’t get white onion soup powder then try Knorr French Onion as a replacement. It will just make the biscuits a little darker.
Add a Savoury Onion Dip
While the biscuits are cooking make the onion dip.
It will only take you a few minutes and it means you use up the remainder of the packet of soup mix. I don’t know about you, but if I have bits and pieces of half used ingredients in my fridge or pantry I always manage to forget them and they eventually get thrown out.
Making this dip to go with the biscuits means you use up that tiny bit of onion powder which would otherwise languish at the back of the fridge!
Onion Dip
- 20g Thick White Onion Soup Powder
- 1 small tub of natural yoghurt
- 1 Tablespoon of mayonnaise
- A squeeze of lemon juice
- Mix all together and put in fridge until ready to eat.
When the cheese and onion biscuits are cooked, leave them to cool, and then lift them out onto a beautiful serving plate or store in a lovely retro biscuit tin.
Immediately invite friends over and enjoy them with a glass of wine, or a nice cool beer, dipping each crunchy biscuit into the Onion Dip.
Yum!
I hope you enjoy these cheddar onion biscuits as much as we do!
