Washable Incontinence Underpants for Ladies
Oh dear, it’s embarassing but it’s a fact of life. Body leaks are an issue at some stage in nearly every woman’s life.
Many women experience small, occasional, involuntary leaks of urine at unbidden times and washable panties for incontinence are a helpful modern solution.
But did you know that disposable sanitary pads are old news? Most are bad for the planet because research suggests they can take anything from 500 to 800 years to biodegrade.
On the other hand Washable incontinence pants, or leakproof briefs as they’re also known, are not only kinder for the earth but they can also be more comfortable to wear.
We tend to discuss urinary problems in hushed tones and only with our closest family or friends, and we’ll search the internet for solutions to keep dry rather than go to retail stores where we can be seen!
But neither women nor men are exempt from this embarassing body problem. Although it is a fairly common problem you should definitely consult your Doctor before assuming it’s normal, especially if it’s a new occurrence, or if it’s worrying you.
For women the day to day problem of leakage has been addressed in the past mostly with the use of disposable pads.
But today we have another option in the form of washable pants which feature a built-in absorbent panel stitched into the pants, protected by another leak-resistant layer.

9 Reasons I love Modibodi Incontinence Underwear
- I love the texture and feel of Modibodi light incontinence pants. They don’t look or feel different to normal briefs except they have an absorbant panel underneath.
- They feel silky smooth to wear, and are inconspicuous beneath my clothes. I can wear them with Ponte Pants or gymwear and they don’t show through.
- They keep me dry, and there is hardly any odour at the end of a long day. I believe this is due to the antimicrobial treatment which helps eliminate bacteria and odour.
- They wash well, although I use a gentle detergent and a gentle, cold machine wash to protect them. If you are still having periods it’s a good idea to rinse them through in cold water first.
- I’ve tried both the bikini style and full brief style. I can’t say that I prefer one above the other although the bikini style is more dainty, and I love the ones with lacy detail.
- There are all sorts of stylish and comfortable designs to choose from; whatever your choice of fit, style or absorbancy.
- They’re made of sustainable materials, according to Modibodi: “Merino wool (Renewable, moisture-wicking and naturally anti-microbial, this biodegradable is a super-fibre) Bamboo Viscose (Requiring no pesticides or fertilisers, bamboo grows abundantly without causing damage to soil), Organic Cotton (GOTS Certified and grown without the use of synthetic chemicals, organic cotton uses over 90% less water and has a far lower environmental impact than conventional cotton)”
- When it comes to swimsuits, there is also a water repellant, leakproof swimwear range here.
- Modibodi ships internationally – great for Lifestyle Fifty readers!

How to Care for Leak Proof Underwear
Incontinence and Menopause
If you’re going through menopause you might be finding it harder to control your bladder. You should obviously talk to your Doctor, but in the meantime why not try a pair of Modibodi pants to help you cope with the immediate problem to keep dry, and stay confident in daily life? There’s nothing worse than worrying about a little leak or two.
According to Independence Australia Your Way; “An older woman’s bladder may get weaker during menopause because her ovaries stop making oestrogen, the hormone that controls her menstrual cycle. This can cause her vaginal tissue to become less elastic, the lining of her urethra to thin and her pelvic floor muscles (which support her urethra and bladder) to reduce. It can also make her bladder less elastic and overstretched, so that it gets irritated when it fills up with urine and becomes ‘overactive.’”

But what can you do to help limit leakage from an everyday lifestyle point of view?
How to Limit Urinary Leakage
The Mayo Clinic has this to say:
Certain drinks, foods and medications may act as diuretics — stimulating your bladder and increasing your volume of urine. They include (but are not limited to):
- Alcohol
- Caffeine
- Carbonated drinks and sparkling water
- Artificial sweeteners
- Chocolate
- Chili peppers
- Foods that are high in spice, sugar or acid, especially citrus fruits
Lifestyle Changes to Help Urinary Incontinence
According to Healthline some other general things you can do to help remedy urinary incontinence are to …
- cut back on your caffeine and alcohol consumption.
- gradually retrain your bladder to hold more urine by only urinating at certain preplanned times of the day.
- lose weight to reduce the pressure on your bladder and muscles.
- use Kegel exercises, or pelvic floor exercises, to strengthen your pelvic muscles.
Don’t Ignore Urinary Leakage
Please see a Doctor if you are in anyway concerned about urinary leakage. I am not a health practioner, and I’m writing this post as helpful general information that I follow, but it may not suit or be relevant to you. Urine leaks can have many causes, and may not be normal, so you should seek expert medical advice. It’s always worth chatting through any kind of body changes with a health professional in case there’s an underlying problem.
