Hey ladies, would you like to look like you’ve lost weight when really you haven’t? Do you want to know how to choose clothes to make you look slimmer?
I think most of us want to have a closet of clothes that help make us look slimmer and fitter rather than rails of clothes we can’t bear to wear because they don’t fit anymore.
We all know that feeling of wanting to look like we still fit into our clothes, as well as look good in them without going on a diet.
Today I want to share with you some tips and tricks on how to do just that and it doesn’t involve Spandex or dieting!
These are easy and realistic ways to make sure you’re looking your best even if the scale is telling you otherwise.

A few months after turning 50, Jilly put on some weight and it all went to her hips and belly.
She knew she had to do something about it but was frustrated because the only things she could find in her closet were clothes that accentuated her new curves.
She felt like a size 16 (when really she was a size 12) with a 2-5 inch paunch hanging over the top of her jeans.
So she went shopping for clothing online, and bought outfits that she thought would work as long as they weren’t too tight across the stomach or hips.
The thing is when she tried them on at home in real life, they just didn’t look good on her at all! She had bought large kaftan type garments, and clothes to cover up her curves rather than accentuate them. She thought she looked terrible.
One day, while home alone cleaning up from breakfast, she got an idea – she took off her baggy T-shirt covering then ugly tight jeans that were cutting into her and giving her a muffin top, grabbed a pair of ponte pants which she teamed with a beautiful long-line blouse. Then she grabbed a little worn shiny black belt from the back of her closet door.
She put them on and suddenly she felt and looked fabulous! She called a girlfriend and suggested lunch at a local bistro!
Does that sound like you! I hope so! Because it’s as easy as that. And yes, Jilly was actually me!
If you are feeling a bit of bulge, get creative. You can still look awesome, and dieting for the sake of vanity or fashion is not something we believe in here at Lifestyle Fifty.
In all honesty, the best way to look like you’ve lost weight is to wear clothes that fit, and to step out of the house looking and feeling vibrant and healthy.
You might be surprised how much better you’ll feel when your clothes are the right size. So if your closet is full of too-tight clothing, it’s time for a makeover!
Chuck out the jeans in the too small size and buy jeans to fit you as you are right now. There’s nothing like a great fitting pair of jeans to help you look slimmer than you really are.
This post will also show you some great tips on what to do with all those “skinny” clothes in your closet – you know, the ones that make you feel good about hanging in your closet, but not so good when you’re trying to ease into them! If they’re not the perfect size anymore it’s time to think again.
Time for a New Look, and Better Fitting Clothes.
Perhaps you have a wedding coming up and want to look your best as an honoured guest, especially in the photos. Never fear, there are plenty of tricks you can find online to make yourself appear slimmer in photos – even if all you’ve done is change how you pose.
For many Lifestyle Fifty readers around the world it’s that time of the year again.
Summer is coming to an end and now you’re dreading those jeans.
You know, those ones that are just a little too tight now but you think you might fit into them again one day? We’ve all been there before – it’s not fun!
But no worries, we have some tips on how to look like you’ve lost weight when really you haven’t as well as clothes that will help you look slimmer effortlessly.
Let’s get started!
15 Ways to Look Like You’ve Lost Weight
- Wear a belt to accentuate your waistline.
- Wear high-rise pants and jeans that pull your tummy in.
- Wear a tight fitting T-shirt under a loose fitting button-up blouse worn open.
- Wear a fitted shirt that is not too tight, but which skims your upper torso and shows off your body shape.
- Add heels to make you look taller and more slender.
- Make sure your formal clothes are well fitting and don’t have lots of loose fabric.
- Choose the right color palette for yourself – go for colors with darker shades on top and lighter ones at the bottom so it looks like you’re slimmer from the waist up while still being able to show off your legs below. This tip should be reversed if your body shape is the other way around!
- Dress well – wear clothes that you love and you’ll instantly feel slimmer.
- Use accessories, like scarves and jewelry, to draw the eye away from areas you want hidden.
- Find flattering colors for your skin tone – we all have colours that make us light up, and colours that drain us.
- Use makeup to make yourself look more fabulous or thinner or younger than you really are
- Chuck our, or gift to charity any clothes which are too tight on you.
- If your jeans give you a muffin top, they are not going to make you look slim and trim – get rid of them.
- Buy the best fitting leather jacket, classic blazer or hip skimming jacket in a neutral colour that you can afford.
- Wear slip on arm sleeves to go under sleeveless tops and dresses to slim down your upper arms.
Dress in Clothes that Flatter your Figure Type
No matter what size you are at any moment in time you need to dress in clothes that you love and that flatter you.
That means avoiding things that emphasize width rather than length.
The goal should be creating visual interest while still looking in proportion; lean and long instead of wider and bulkier.
For instance, learn how to wear accessories strategically so they direct the eye away from your hips or tummy.
A bright scarf in a lovely print can work wonders, or big dangly earrings will add instant eye candy glamour.
Vertical lines can elongate a look.
Wearing clothes with some stretch in them can give the illusion of being more fitted than they really are, and can be really figure flattering.
Looking slimmer in the clothes you wear is all about what you wear and how you wear them. Even skinny chicks can look larger than they are if they wear something like an ill-fitting pair of dungarees and a loose T-shirt.
These are just some of the simple ways of dressing that will give others, and yourself, the impression that you’ve lost some pounds when really all you’re doing is drawing attention to your good points and leaning away from where you may be carrying extra weight.
If there’s no way around an item of clothing with a width emphasis, for example wide legs on pants or cullottes, and you really want to wear them, then do pair them with something slimming like a fitted T or a silky camisole with a hip skimming jacket. Or go for vertical stripes on top – which naturally elongates the body-line making us appear longer and leaner. Don’t wear an oversize blouse.
Again, repeat after me, ‘Wearing cover-up clothes is not always the best option if you want to hide a large belly or bum.’ Clothing that is roomy or has a loose fit will only draw attention to how big you look and feel.
If you plan on wearing something tight-fitting like skinny jeans, then you can balance them with an oversize shirt and tuck it in on just one hip to give you more shape. The idea behind this outfit choice is to make your clothing work hard at camouflaging the parts of you that you’d rather the world doesn’t see.
A peplum blouse is great at disguising a large tummy and accentuating your waistline. In fact pairing a peplum blouse with a pair of skinny jeans can also help you achieve the same results.
What Dresses Make you Look Slimmer?
Jersey dresses with a wrap style front are often really flattering because they can give the appearance of a slimmer waist line. Just make sure you don’t buy them in a too-clingy fabric.
